SF Planetarium, Nvidia Team Up for a Truly Cosmic Show
The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco is using a room full of Nvidia Quadro-powered servers to render and play Life: A Cosmic Story in the 90-foot dome of the museum's Morrison Planetarium (video below).
The planetarium was known in the 1980s to San Francisco residents as the place to view trippy laser light shows that dazzled viewers alongside music from the likes of Pink Floyd and Genesis.
That may have been state-of-the-art back then, but the recent $500-million renovation of the California Academy of Sciences facility in Golden Gate Park included an upgrade to the planetarium's digital projection system that would have really blown away the mix of yuppies and hippies that attended those old laserium shows.
Now boasting one of the world's most sophisticated systems of its kind, the planetarium hosts about 750,000 visitors a year. Currently, they're being treated to a 25-minute film experience that's actually manipulated by planetarium staff in real-time to splash stunning imagery across the surrounding planetarium dome as "the 14-billion-year saga of how we came to be" comes to life.
"We've tried to really create an immersive experience, so it's almost like you are traveling through space, or traveling into a plant cell," said planetarium director Ryan Wyatt.
To do that, the planetarium's digital projection system leverages the power of Nvidia's latest and greatest GPUs to not just project the film in the dome, but to process the massive amounts of real-time rendering necessary to "pilot the planetarium like a video game," as Wyatt put it.
The Life: A Cosmic Story show uses 24 Nvidia Quadro graphics cards, 12 for rendering and another dozen for playback on the 75 feet of the dome that's used as a screen—which incidentally boasts 4096-by-4096 pixel resolution, if you're keeping score at home.
