Macomb Twp. Artist Has Eye for Photography
Ted Lang has an eye for taking something ordinary and turning it into something beautiful.
The renowned photographer and Macomb Township resident has traveled all over the world taking pictures of everything he sees. To Lang, no subject has ever been off-limits.
Spending much of his childhood at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Lang said he has been inspired by the art of photography his entire life.
“I think I was born with a camera attached to my arm," said Lang, a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography. “As long as I can remember, I’ve been photographing; from the time I was a kid, I’ve always been attracted by images.”
As a member of the Shelby Township Fine Art Society, the Warren Tri-County Fine Arts Association and the Mount Clemens Art Association, Lang’s presence in the southeast Michigan art community is undeniable.
Whether he is exhibiting a photograph of a quiet street in Paris, a beach in California or even a bus stop in Ann Arbor, Lang has the ability to convey a simple image and bring it to life. Lang has even given his art its own distinct category of “dreamy surrealism.”
“One of the aspects of art is being able to communicate a feeling, an emotion, some beauty, some truth to another person,” Lang said. “When I do that, there’s just a certain satisfaction that goes beyond words.”
A former art gallery owner, Lang has won numerous awards for his work, including a coveted blue ribbon from Margot’s Gallery in Oxford this past March for his piece “On Paint Creek, Rochester,” which was also featured in the national magazine, Trout Times .
He currently holds the title of the Warren Artist of the Month, where his work is displayed in the Warren City Hall Atrium, as well as the Shelby Township Artist of the Month, with photographs being featured in the Shelby Senior Center.
Though such recognition brings Lang tremendous satisfaction, his real achievement hits closer to home.
“If somebody can look at an image that I’ve created, stop and have to look at it again, and be compelled to really study that image, and maybe even say ‘How did he do that?’... and to see something that they’ve seen before but to see it in a fresh light; that’s what I would like some to take away,” Lang said.
Lang’s photographs are currently on display inside of the Warren Community Center and will be featured next month during the "Healing Arts" program inside Clinton Township’s Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, and at the Shelby Township Art Fair in August.

As the Mira Costa High School class of 2011 prepares for a new journey in life, Marie Lauzon told Patch that she is beyond ready to see "what else is out there."
The graduating senior will be attending Baylor University in the fall. Lauzon's major is undecided, but she said that she is leaning towards studying applied mathematics and minoring in creative writing.
Lauzon talked to Patch about why she selected Baylor and some of her treasured experiences at Mira Costa.
Hermosa Beach Patch: Looking back, what was the best thing about Mira Costa? Lauzon: One particular teacher that inspired me was Ms. Vaughan because after having her all four years, not only did she teach me how to become a more confident writer, but also how to become a more confident person.
Furthermore, she taught me that nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something, which encouraged me to lend a helping hand through programs like Operation Angel Tree and to use my skills in the classroom to help others, by becoming a tutor. Lauzon: The college process was exhausting, but I am extremely excited about Baylor—I was deciding between Baylor and Wake Forest University. I knew I wanted to go to a 'southern' school with strong academics, an exciting sports program, and small town atmosphere, and after visiting Baylor and experiencing the welcoming Christian environment, I fell in love.
