Controversy Over Miniature Horse In Broken Arrow Returns
In 2008 a miniature horse named Dakota made headlines when his owners bought him as a pet, and kept him in the back yard of their Broken Arrow home in the Lakeview gated neighborhood. After a year of conflict and court battles Broken Arrow changed its pet ordinances, allowing Dakota to stay in his home. Now the controversy over whether Dakota should be allowed to be kept in the backyard of a home in a neighborhood is resurfacing. In 2009 Broken Arrow changed its pet ordinance because of the controversy over Dakota. The law was changed to say that residents cannot keep cows, goats, sheep or horses - including miniature and dwarf varieties of horses - on less than an acre of property. The Copelands were grandfathered in, and therefore the ordinance did not affect their ability to keep Dakota in their yard. Mr.Copeland, I am sorry to read about the change in your family's situation. I am sure it is upsetting for all of you, including your son, who I am sure loves Dakota. I have a few miniature horses, and would be happy to add Dakota to the small herd. And if there were times your son or other children would like to visit him, that would be fine. Feel free to call me at 918-260-5288 if you would like to discuss the matter further. Blessings, Pam Mr. Copeland, My husband and I are very interested in helping give Dakota a new home. I have a 3 yr old son and a 2 month old daughter who would love to have him. I live on 20 acres and have 4 horses who need a new companion to run the winds with them. My name is Krystal please call me at (918) 955-1813 I would also feel comfortable with letting you and your family come see him as often as you like. Hope to hear from you. Mr. Copeland, I am very interested in Dakota. My husband and I do birthday parties for children and I am running a Farm Camp for elementary age children this summer.
