Arts in school are a hit
It’s no secret the arts have been on the cutting block for many school districts because of budget slashes. At North Shore Elementary School more than a year ago, principal Kevin Amburgey, at the urging of former Bear Valley Unified School District superintendent Nancy Wright, started brainstorming about how to bring the arts back.
North Shore already had a stellar reputation for the performing arts thanks to teacher Robin O’Hare, who had nearly half the school involved in drama, chorus, hand bells, drum corps and the recorder band, Amburgey said. But those programs were elective after-school programs. Amburgey decided to take the kids’ enthusiasm for the arts a step further.
Arts education is offered in four strands in California per the education code: music, drama, visual arts and dance. With statistics bolstering academic excellence tied to the arts, Amburgey dove in during the 2010-11 school year, offering all four strands, unique in today’s educational climate.
VAPA, which stands for Visual and Performing Arts, was implemented in the fall, involving all North Shore students. Two days a week, students spend 45 minutes away from their desks singing, dancing and learning to play musical instruments in the percussion or keyboard labs.
“We’ve always had a visual arts program, but it’s been fun to bring dance and drama into the curriculum,” Amburgey said. “That was a bonus.” For example, in drama the kids participate in what Amburgey calls “reader theater,” in which they read short plays aloud and learn about characterization, improvisation and stage terms. In the piano lab, kids learn to read music and tickle the ivories into melodies.
The students spend six weeks in the same arts strand. Teachers work together to develop lesson plans and then the students rotate between teachers, which exposes the kids to different teaching styles, as well, Amburgey said.
Teachers are offered guidance from fellow teachers O’Hare, Manny Marquez and Karen Geiger, who each bring their arts backgrounds to the table. They also receive help from outside volunteers, including voice coach Diane Sloan Kubeja, drum corps instructor Ken O’Hare, and artists Wendy Craig and Heather Kelly. Amburgey hopes for more community volunteers next school year.
The biggest challenges, Amburgey said, have been scheduling and logistics. Now that the school achieved its goal of getting the arts back into the school, they are looking to fine-tune how it’s done.
