High-Tech Monroe Art Teacher Gets National Recognition

Monroe Elementary School art teacher Theresa McGee was one of 12 teachers nationwide to receive the PBS Teachers Innovation Award earlier this month. According to PBS, the award recognizes “educators’ creative and inventive use of public media to engage students and improve.”

McGee, who will get a tour of the WTTW studios in July before receiving her award in August in Dearborn, Mich., has been at Monroe for 14 years and uses technologies like podcasting and Google Earth in her classrooms to show students how art impacts their lives and the lives of others. She gets 45 minutes per week with the kindergarten through second grade students and an hour with third through fifth graders.

Patch spoke with McGee over the phone Thursday to get a few more questions answered about technology in the art classroom and her award, which might have been fated. Her great uncle was a producer on "Sesame Street" and was behind the invention of The Count, one of the show's classic characters.  

Patch: You've been in District 181 for 14 years. What keeps you there?

Theresa McGee: In the last two years as far as technology goes, the district has really opened up a lot and really transformed itself to a district that really embraces technology. That has really allowed me to excel because it's one of the things that I’ve always gravitated to. I actually started out as a major in electronic media and then decided I needed to have more personal interaction with people and that’s how I got into art education. To be able to do both is sort the best of all worlds. I have kids that have computers at home so it helps that they come with some skills to begin with and some excitement and motivation.

P:  So what are some examples of how you use technology in your art classes?

TM: It’s not always specifically, "You’re going to draw a picture on a computer." That’s far more rare than the other ways that technology is integrated. For example, the thing I did this year was actually more of a community event. I was able to figure out how to use QR codes to link concepts the kids worked on in class and then during our art show this year, parents and the kids who had iTouches were able to come with an app that I kind of prepared them with. They could scan this QR code and link directly to whatever it was we had been learning about. That was a really big hit.
