Enmore's pipes hit the right notes

St. Luke Church in Enmore just completed a $ 107 000 restoration of its 1883 pipe organ.

After more than a century of operation, it was time to clear out the pipes, the organist Kathy Drummond.

"You can actually hear what all the different stops should sound like now," Mrs. Drummond, 53, of Guildford, said.

"There are beautiful sounds that you could not hear before."

It is the only body of Wordsworth and Maskell in Australia and one of the few to operate entirely by mechanical means, as opposed to electro-pneumatic organs.

"This is a completely mechanical body," she said.

"When you press a key it moves a tracker.

"This body is part of the industrial revolution, forges and other parts are proof of that."

Ms. Drummond said the Heritage Council of State has contributed $ 30 000 for the restoration, while Marrickville Council also contributed $ 1,000.

There would be some modification of the facade pipes still to come, Ms Drummond said.
