$2500 award aids teacher's pursuit of master's degree

Lily Lee-Jones, an Atwater High School mathematics teacher, just won $2,500 in a national contest, which will come in handy to help pay for the master's degree she is seeking.

Lee-Jones was one of three nationwide winners in the Success Yearbook video contest. Part of UniversityDecisions.com, a research and resource-focused website for potential college students, the contest encourages graduates to share their personal college success stories in a YouTube video.

Lee-Jones said the website's competition looked promising and was easy. She said the contest is a great way to offset fees associated with higher education and she encourages other area graduates to follow in her footsteps.

Her quest for a master's degree in educational technology from San Diego State University began two years ago. Her master's thesis focuses on incorporating technology in the classroom, something she is doing in her geometry and precalculus classes at Atwater High.

Her winning Success Yearbook "bio" says: "I have been teaching high school mathematics since earning my teaching credential in 2004. I'm still earning my graduate degree online. As a teacher I have a busy schedule with my classes. But I'm able to balance family, work and school.

"Teaching has been the perfect career for me, because I love learning and sharing. I especially enjoy learning about technology in the classroom. Every year is a new challenge. I look forward to August when a new slate of students enter my classroom."

Lee-Jones submitted the two-minute YouTube video and enlisted votes of support on social networking sites such as Facebook and through e-mails. She said many corporations are offering online contests with money available through social media.

"It's a new phenomenon," Lee-Jones said. "You need to go out and find it. It's a way to get project ideas funded, especially with today's budget cuts."

Mathematics education in the United States, she said, isn't where it's supposed to be. A 1997 University of California at Davis graduate with a bachelor's degree in classical civilization, Lee-Jones has taught math at Atwater since 2002 and got her credential two years later from California State University, Stanislaus.

Lee-Jones said she loves teaching math and enjoys explaining mathematical concepts to students. It's a challenge to come up with ways for math concepts to click with her students; math teaching today has become more application- driven than in the past.
