What do deer do at church? Eat, pray, leave
"It's been pretty wild," Maness said. Maness, a former state trooper, calls it simply the "Colonial deer incident." Here's what he said happened:
The two deer were interested in food left behind on the picnic tables under the church portico. Spooked by people, the bigger deer crashed through a plate-glass window into the church's entry hallway.
Unable to get out a door, the deer crashed through another full-length window and escaped into the courtyard toward the shopping center at Tryon Road near the Walnut Street intersection.
The second deer ended up in the church's library, where it knocked over a table and chair before sprinting back down the hallway, followed by a pastor.
Back at the main entrance, the deer ran out an open door.
"And we haven't seen either since," Maness concluded.
Nobody was hurt. The church is replacing the windows - currently marked with a "Deer Crossing" sign.
So why did the deer go to church? It's a popular joke at the church and on the Internet.
