Legislator tries to hang up on phone books
A state senator from San Francisco is trying to push the white pages the way of the rotary phone.
Democrat Leland Yee has asked the California Public Utilities Commission to give consumers the choice to not receive a white pages directory from their phone company.
San Francisco already is on the front edge of an emerging movement to reduce the number of unwanted yellow pages with a recently enacted policy that prevents companies from delivering the print directories unless customers request them.
San Diego city leaders said they are waiting to see how such bans fare in court before they look at implementing similar rules.
In a letter to utilities regulators, Yee pushed a resolution which would require a consumer’s consent before a white pages directory could be delivered. The commission is expected to consider the item Thursday in San Francisco.
“Unwanted phone books only result in further degradation of our environment and a loss of much-needed local resources,” said Yee. “Consumers deserve a choice and our environment deserves to be protected.”
While many Californians use their smart phones and the Internet to find phone numbers, large numbers of residents still rely on paper directories. An alliance of phone book publishers is challenging ban attempts, saying the government can't prohibit some forms of speech.
Statistics from the Local Search Association, an international trade group formerly known as the Yellow Pages Association, show that roughly 75 percent of adults consulted a printed phone directory in the past year, totaling 11 billion times that people flipped through such books.
More than 78 million telephone directories are distributed annually to California business and residential telephone consumers, according to Yee's office. He and other critics say the production and distribution of printed directories creates a major environmental burden.
Despite support from environmental groups, Yee’s Senate Bill 920 failed last year in the Senate on a 12-18. It would have allowed consumers statewide to opt out of phone books.

I just want to THANK you for such a great day! I just reviewed all of our shots and after explaining what the experiments were to my husband I realized how much we covered today. I really learned a lot about white balance which was such an interesting study with our night photographs. That was a function of my camera that I never even knew had such creative possibilities and can’t wait to use it again. The observatory black and whites surprised me as it appeared on the LCD that there was more separation of the domes and sky but perhaps this was b/c the brightness setting gave us that impression? Overall it was great and I would be interested in doing another outing again in the future so please keep me posted as to when you will be in LA.

While in San Diego I was able to take a few days with Elle and customize a photo tour of the entire area. Man, what an adventure. This guy is not only a great teaching photographer but a tour guide and restaurant expert all rolled into one. We took in the great San Diego Zoo,the Island, the Mission, the beach, Old Town and even had a night time course. Again..What an adventure, what a guy.
