What Causes High Blood Pressure?

Have you been experiencing a crushing headache to the extent that it makes you feel nauseous and dizzy? Has this been persisting for several days now? Well if you are positive in answering those questions, you might want to have your blood pressure checked! The symptoms you may have been experiencing are common to people suffering from hypertension.

Hypertension is what happens when the blood pressure of a person shoots up, above the normal levels. Normally, our blood pressure is at 120/80 mmHg—a measurement taken by the use of an aneroid sphygmomanometer, mercury sphygmomanometer, or other electronic or digital methods. Blood pressure is the force of the blood exerted by the heart in order for the blood to reach various organs inside our body.

Types of High Blood Pressure Causes

The first type high blood pressure causes, and also the most common is Primary Hypertension. Primary hypertension is that of the unknown cause—meaning it happens as a normal part of a person’s life but the exact etiology is still unknown.

The second type is what we refer to as Secondary Hypertension. There are certain medical conditions which give rise to hypertension like diabetes, kidney failure, etc.

High Blood Pressure Causes

Unhealthy Lifestyle . Most hypertension attacks are due to a person’s lifestyle. Included in this cause are the following (1) diet and (2) activity level. In terms of diet, if you are a fan and a lover of fatty foods, those foods rich in cholesterol, salty and oily delicacies, chances of developing hypertension is not far from possible. Also, if you are a couch potato and spend more than half of your day sitting prettily and soundly, don’t be surprised if you are diagnosed with high blood pressure one day.

Diabetes Mellitus . Diabetes Mellitus is one of those diseases which are directly linked to an increase in blood pressure. In a person with DM, the blood becomes so viscous due to its high sugar content… as such; it becomes difficult to pass inside the vessels. This triggers the heart to compensate by exerting more force to push the blood further leading to hypertension.

Pregnancy . Hypertension can also possibly occur among pregnant women. The reason behind this is that the amount of blood in a pregnant woman’s body increases. In such case, the heart compensates by increasing its force and contractions leading to high blood pressure. Hypertension in pregnancy is dangerous because it endangers the life of both the fetus and the mother so it should be checked by an obstetrician immediately.

The Common Causes Of High Blood Pressure | welcome to oadt.us

In many cases, high blood pressure (or hypertension) is something people live with for a long time before it’s finally diagnosed. Since there are not always symptoms, it’s a good idea to have your blood pressure checked regularly to make sure it’s within a normal range. If you are aware of the causes of high blood pressure it’s easier to avoid it, so we will now explore some of these.

Smoking is one activity that can cause high blood pressure. Smokers are more likely to have high blood pressure, and to develop heart disease than non-smokers. Your arteries can become blocked and hardened when you smoke, and this contributes to high blood pressure. While any smoking is a definite risk factor, it’s also true that the amount you smoke has an impact on your health, and heavy smokers are more likely to have high blood pressure and other health problems. The fact is, however, that smoking to any degree at all, and even exposure to second hand smoke, can increase your risk of hypertension. Fortunately, even if you’re a long time smoking, if you quit you can reverse many health problems, including hypertension.

Heavy drinkers of alcohol are putting themselves at risk for hypertension. You may have heard that light drinking, of wine in particular, is good for your heart health, but this only refers to one or two drinks. Yet evidence also shows that heavy drinking, of more than two glasses of an alcoholic beverage every day, has more negative than positive effects on your blood pressure and overall health. And quite a few people are unable to drink in moderation. To control your blood pressure, then, the ideal is to consume small amounts of alcohol, but it’s better not to drink at all than to drink too much.

Taking prescribed, over the counter or illegal drugs can also increase your blood pressure. Users of street drugs such as crack and amphetamines often have high blood pressure. However, many prescribed drugs, including birth control pills and antidepressants can contribute to high blood pressure. Medications bought at the pharmacy without a prescription, such as appetite suppressants and even cold medicines can also raise your blood pressure sometimes. If your blood pressure is high, make sure you pay attention to any medications you take, even over the counter ones. Always ask your doctor if any medication he or she has prescribed may cause high blood pressure.

When it comes to identifying the causes of high blood pressure, you have to consider your family and medical history, diet and lifestyle. With the help of your doctor, you can develop healthier habits to control your blood pressure. The above are some typical causes of high blood pressure, so if any of these apply to you it’s a good idea to have your blood pressure checked. Once you understand the causes of hypertension, it’s easier to address them and reduce your blood pressure.
