COLEMAN — In his church without walls, Dan Griffin keeps an open door.

"We're interdenominational. I've preached in every type of church there is for the last 41 years," he said.

Griffin has been holding a tent revival on the west side of south Commercial Avenue between Dairy Queen and Sonic since May 25. Every night this week at 7 p.m. his white and yellow striped pavilion will liven up the evening with old-time gospel music and preaching. The revival ends Saturday.

"I've done this type of work since 1970," he said. "I'm 57 — I started at 16. "I just do tent evangelism. In the winter time we'll go into auditoriums or churches, but as long as the weather is permitting, we do it in the tent."

The evening's setting sun lights the top of the canopy, bathing the small group below in a warm, yellowish light. Beneath the tent, folding chairs face a worn lectern where Griffin and two young assistants play guitars in front of an audio mixing board, amplifiers and other equipment.

Except for the canvas behind the audio gear, all of the tent walls are rolled up. An occasional 18-wheeler or pickup with an obnoxiously loud muffler rolls by on Commercial to compete momentarily with Griffin's public address system. But generally there is little difficulty hearing him, either under the tent or most likely within three blocks.

"We're just sowing seed," Griffin said. "You have to get in the field to do that."

Revivals have two goals, to convert nonbelievers and to bolster the faithful. To accomplish that, Griffin delivers his message by alternating it between spoken word and live music.

"Our music is usually geared a little more loud and not that sedated-type feeling. We want that atmosphere," he said. "We want them to feel it, to get ahold of something and to know it's real. It's not something that's just hidden in a closet somewhere, it's for the world."

Griffin moved to the Big Country from Mississippi and for the last three years has been holding tent revivals throughout the area. Before Coleman he was in Ranger for five nights. After Coleman, it will be on to Cisco and Breckenridge.

"Our sole goal is to reach people that the church is not (reaching)," he said.

He described his ministry as "evangelism in the highways and the hedges," where people would not expect to see a church service.

"People pull up and they'll listen for a while," he said. "We were set up in South Louisiana one year. We were right across from the beach and people walked in with their swimming suits on. But that's what the environment is, we want everybody to feel comfortable.
