Hillsborough job fair offers 1000 teaching jobs

Tampa, Florida - Teachers have seen many changes to their profession this year from job loss to pay cuts.

But the situation isn't as bad everywhere. Teachers from across the state, even the nation, are flocking to Hillsborough to find a job.

Teachers fresh out of college, others with years of experience, compete for jobs at 38 high-poverty Hillsborough schools during the district's annual job fair.  The first of the 3-day job fairs is being held at the Double Tree Hotel near Jefferson High School.

USF graduate Kristine Kelly hopes to land a job at one of the district's renaissance schools. "I feel at the Renaissance schools one can make a big impact," says Kristine.

Across the room is veteran Rikki Johnson, who taught in Nevada for 21 years. "It's scary everywhere. Hillsborough seems the most promising," says Rikki.

Hillsborough is hiring 1,000 teachers over the 3-day job fair - that's about 500 fewer jobs than last year.

If hired, the teachers interviewing will begin the new school year with changes in the classroom that will impact their salary and how they are evaluated, but is it enough to keep them from wanting to teach? Teachers and state employees will contribute three percent of their pay to their pensions. The Florida Education Association is suing the state over it.

"It's difficult to give up pay for pension, but the bottom line is I want to work, work with kids, and continue to teach," says Rikki.

Teacher evaluations and part of their pay will be based on student test scores. "I had great teachers yet I bombed the SAT in high school. It's not always the teacher's fault. Some students have test anxiety," says Kristine.

Kristine showed no anxiety during her first interview with BT Washington Elementary. The principal is considering her for the job. "Her personality, her drive, background, is a little like our students," says Tomanita Martinez, principal at BT Washington Elementary.

Kristine has five more interviews today and she says she's optimistic. "Hopefully, they'll go as good as that one I did. I need a job."

The Hillsborough teacher job fair continues Wednesday and Thursday at Jefferson High School in Tampa. Pinellas held a job fair for teachers today. The district is hiring 200 new teachers.
