Summer programs keep students' minds, bodies active

The final school bells have rung all around the Treasure Coast. Though summer relaxation seems to be the only thing running through students' minds, experts say lazy days for children are a don't, while physical and cerebral activities are essential throughout the season.

Last year, first lady Michelle Obama started the nationwide initiative, "Let's read, let's move," to expand opportunities to engage young people in summer reading and physical activities. According to the program, children can lose more than two months of progress in reading achievement over the summer, while millions gain weight without physical activity.

"It's called the 'summer lag'," said Sarah Howard, program assistant at the St. Lucie libraries' children's department. "Over the summer, children can fall behind in studies if they don't keep up with learning. They need to do activities that are fun, but also that help them learn new things."

For parents who have opted their children out of summer camp, home activities can help your kids stay busy this summer. Kid-friendly recipes engage children's minds, as does participating in a county-wide library summer reading challenge. There are outdoor games that require no more than a ball or jump rope, and art masterpieces can be made from materials found at a nearby discount store.

Also plentiful are local activities that promise to keep youngsters off the couches and socializing this summer for a low or no cost. Martin County Library System offer dozens of programs and events year-round, as well as other places around the county. Here are a few:
