More Grant Money Coming for Former Monaco Employees

EUGENE, Ore. -- After months of delay, more grant money is finally on the way to help those laid off from Monaco Coach Corp. in Coburg.
Monaco filed for bankruptcy in 2009, and the U-S Department of Labor promised $3 million dollars to help the 1,050 workers laid off.
$1.7 million came right away, but the rest has been delayed almost a year.
Now they will be getting the second installment of the $1.3 million National Emergency Grant.
The money helps the former workers train and compete for new jobs. Most use the money to go to Lane Community College.
Lane Workforce Partnership helps them do that, and investment manager Kristina Payne says they couldn't assist some who wanted to go back to school because Lane Workforce Partnership didn't know if they would receive the funds.
"It definitely slowed us down. You don't want to promise something you don't have. It's so much better when you have the money right in hand to be able to work with an individual and say 'yes, we can help you go to school,'" she said.
Payne says Lane Workforce Partnership has helped about 56 percent of the former workers find jobs.
She says with degrees from LCC, most have found work in the health care field as medical office assistants and radiology technicians.
She says others enrolled in truck driving school, while some didn't go back to school, but instead used the grant money to get help finding another job in manufacturing.
