Many of you are probably planning to go to your kids' baseball games this weekend. That's what a group of parents were doing when they realized one of the fans was someone they didn't want in the crowd.
Right next to Linwood Elementary School is the ball field. It's a pretty small park, but a spectator raised some very big concerns when he continued to show up at the ball field despite being convicted of five sex crimes against children.
"I'm not from the area so I don't know how to know to protect my child from him. It's upsetting," says Cheri Noe, a concerned parent.
Noe told KCTV5's Jeanene Kiesling she had no idea about the controversy surrounding these little league ball fields in Linwood until Friday night.
"He shouldn't be here," said Noe.
He is Chris King. In December he was convicted of raping and sodomizing an 8-year-old girl. Until local parents got involved, he was continuing to come to the ball field to watch his son play while he was out on bond appealing his case.
"We received letters from parents that Chris King was still going to ball fields and it caused alarm to parents of other children," said Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.
KCTV5's Jeanene Kiesling talked off camera with one of the parents who pleaded with prosecutors to get restrictions against King. In an email to the county attorney's office she wrote, "I do not feel comfortable even letting go of my daughters hand when he is around." The mother went on to write, "Why are we giving him the opportunity to steal another child's innocence?"
"We try to alleviate fears and worries of people in the community," said Thompson.
Prosecutors went back to the judge who then ordered King to stay at least 1000 feet away from anywhere children would gather, including the ball field. For parents it's the best win they could ask for.
"I don't think they can be rehabilitated. It's like putting a kid in a candy store - letting him go where all the children are," said Noe.
King faces life in prison. KCTV5's Jeanene Kiesling did try to speak to him Friday night for a comment but he didn't want to talk.
