36 million tons of turkey recalled as salmonella hits Louisiana
A nationwide outbreak of salmonella has sickened at least one Louisiana resident and caused dozens around the nation to become ill, including one fatality. The disease outbreak has been traced back to a single "processing plant" (let's call it a slaughterhouse for reality's sake) in Springdale, Arkansas owned by Cargill, Inc.
Cargill, Inc. has recalled nearly 36 million pounds of ground turkey, providing a list of all of the products it is recalling , which includes photos of the packaging. All of the packages recalled include the code "Est. P-963" on their labels. It is notable that Cargill does not put its own name on the labels, but uses pleasant sounding brand names like "Shady Brook Farms" and "Honeysuckle" and also claims that many of their processed meats are "natural." Deceptive labeling practices are common amongst corporations. The word natural is nearly meaningless. Salmonella is natural, and so is dying from eating tainted meat near a shady brook.
Keeping things in perspective, less than 100 people sickened during the nationwide consumption of millions of pounds of turkey flesh seems within reasonable expectations. After all, we drive cars knowing that a percentage of us will die in automobile accidents. However, these statistics merely reflect the number of people who have gone to the hospital due to the symptoms of salmonella poisoning (which can include diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and internal bleeding) and then been diagnosed with the disease. There are undoubtedly many more people affected who have not reported their illness or who have been misdiagnosed. The CDC estimates that for every reported case of food poisoning, 38 go unreported. The CDC also estimates that the salmonella pathogen causes 1.4 million cases of illness a year, and approximately 400 human deaths.
Another sobering aspect of this story is that because of factory farming bacterial strains are becoming more resistant to antibiotics. The CDC tells us that this current outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg is "resistant to several commonly prescribed antibiotics; this antibiotic resistance may increase the risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected individuals."
Because we keep animals in intensive confinement to maximize the profits we reap from selling their bodies, we have to give them massive doses of antibiotics to keep them alive long enough to reach killing size. The diseases that survive the confinement and demise of the host animals (in this case turkeys) are then spread around in the process of 'processing' the animals, so that contaminated meat goes out into the human food supply. Humans who are unfortunate enough to get diseases like salmonella then have a harder time fighting them off because the pathogens have already built up resistance to the antibiotics we commonly use.
