Universities Are Dead … Long Live Universities

The recent Thiel fellowships , rewarding a group of 20 undergraduates to drop out of college and pursue their entrepreneurial ideas, has spurred a lot of debate about whether university education really provides any value and if university are on their way out. Unusually the debate begins with someone arguing that they only used 5% of what the learned in college, that entrepreneurs learn everything by just doing it, and that there are so many online resources today that you can just teach yourself whatever you actually need to know.

Myth 1: You Can Teach Yourself Everything

I have to admit I find these arguments entertaining but misguided. Let’s start with the argument that the internet liberates people to self-educate, making universities and professors irrelevant and replacing them with institutions like the Kahn Academy or bloggers. The critiques claim that people can teach themselves whatever they would like just by going online. Unfortunately, this argument doesn’t hold water and suffers from the common “recency” bias that leads people to say that times today are tougher, faster, or whatever other moniker seems to be true right now. The truth is that self-education has always been possible in modern American society, certainly for many decades before the internet, by simply going to the local library. If you take a look back ten years or more you will find a select group of people who, like today’s self-taught internet heroes, taught themselves everything they know by spending time in the library. So in my view these arguments confound the person with the situation—there have always been a small group of individuals who have self-educated themselves and self-education has actually always been available in modern society. Of course in the past the local library may have had some limitations, but these limitations were not all bad. While the internet does enable more content to be made available, it also means that a great deal of content that is irrelevant, partially accurate, or subtly misleading can also be made available. It also means that when it comes to education, it can take a great deal of time to sort through a lot of material to find the core idea. The truth is that most people aren’t adequately motivated or might not have the intuitive insight as to how to direct their search to really educate themselves. A university provides the framework for what to study and the guide on the trail. This crucial role to curate and guide is one reason why universities will remain.

"The aim of the scheme is to encourage those people who have not been able to complete their education till SSC or those who passed SSC and were unable to complete HSC, to complete their degree. It is observed that most of the students who leave their education mid way are employed somewhere, for instance, as construction workers, plumbers or in other jobs which force them to leave education mid way." An official in the education department revealed, "Various modern research topics including cloning in animals, topics in physical training such as understanding a sport, rules of various sports disciplines, how to prepare a field for a particular sport, how to maintain the track, among others will be covered. Students taking up the course will have a sound knowledge to employ themselves once they pass out."
