The woman born Patricia Maureen Rose in Baghdad has travelled a rich and varied journey in her 62 years. She came from a British colonial family in Iraq: her grandfather had been the British pro-consul there and her father was a loss adjuster at the ­Baghdad office of a British insurance firm. Her mother was half-Scottish and half-Iraqi.

One evening the belly dancer was sick and 19-year-old Pat, with her Middle Eastern upbringing, was asked to fill in. One of the customers was Russell Gay, a leading figure in Britain’s top-shelf publishing ­industry. Instantly besotted, he set about ­persuading Pat that a modelling career beckoned. Not one to resist a good opportunity, she married him when she was 19 and he was 50. She posed naked in his magazines and began a sex advice column in one of them, Knave.
