OKI B720dn

The OKI B720dn ($999.99 direct) is the same printer as the OKI B720n ($849 direct, 3.5 stars), but with an automatic duplexer added. Though the OKI B720n offers an auto-duplexer as an option, at $311.99 it would cost you more than twice as the difference in price between the two models. If there's any chance you'll want to print on both sides of a sheet of paper (for one thing, it saves paper when you're printing rough drafts), you should consider the B720dn over the non-duplex version. Its output quality is so-so, and we've seen faster mono lasers, but any office facing massive black-and-white print volumes should give it a close look.

The B720dn is a monochrome laser-class (LED) printer geared to offices with huge print loads, with a 250,000-sheet monthly duty cycle and 700-sheet standard paper capacity with options for much more.

The OKI B720dn that uses an LED-based engine, essentially the same as a laser, but using light-emitting diodes instead of a laser as a light source. It's white with gently curving sides, and measures 15.9 by 16.6 by 18.3 inches (HWD), relatively compact for a printer with a masssive monthly duty cycle.

The top panel contains a 5-line blue, backlit LCD display, an alphanumeric keypad, and a port for a USB thumb drive. The keypad lets administrators control access to the printer, and users can enter PIN numbers to access stored jobs. Although you can't preview documents on the display, before printing from the thumb drive you can print out a summary of the drive's contents, which includes filenames, file sizes, and dates.

The B720dn's 700-sheet paper capacity, between a 150-sheet and 550-sheet tray, is generous. OKI offers a pair of optional 550-sheet paper trays for $311.99 (direct) to a max of 1,800-sheet capacity. Among the other options are an offset output tray ($319.99) and a 40GB hard drive ($327.99).

Although the B720dn has a copious standard paper capacity, it is outstripped by some other mono lasers in paper-handling potential. The Editors' Choice Lexmark T650n ($699 direct, 4 stars) comes standard with only a 350-sheet capacity, but users can add as options a duplexer, stacker, finisher, and output bin, plus additional trays to boost the paper capacity up to a whopping 4,000 sheets.

The B720dn offers USB and Ethernet connectivity, plus parallel and RS-232-C serial connections for legacy gear. We tested it on an Ethernet network with a PC running Windows Vista.
