Samsung Series 8 (UA55D8000) 3D LED TV

Bottom Line:

The Samsung Series 8 (UA55D8000) 3D LED TV is one of the best panels on the market for watching Full HD content. The level of detail it can display from a high quality source is excellent. It's also packed full of features -- even if some of them aren't quite up to scratch -- and has an excellent design. If you can afford to spend the coin it's a quality product, even though some of its integrated Web features aren't as well implemented as we were hoping.

The Series 8 is Samsung’s top-tier LED TV, with all the features of lesser TVs like the Series 7 and Series 6 as well as boosts to picture quality and video processing. If you can afford to pay for it it’s an excellent TV with no crippling flaws — the few problems are mainly restricted to the TV’s Web features. However, its Series 8 plasma rival has almost equal picture quality and offers larger screen sizes.

Samsung Series 8 3D LED TV: Design

The Series 8 looks just like its Series 8 plasma sibling, apart from a much thinner bezel around its 55in screen. The 5mm thick chromed bezel blends into the space behind the television, so in a dimly-lit room the Series 8’s screen stands out. It’s a very modern-looking TV — times have changed since chunky piano black LCD TVs dominated the market two years ago. The Loewe-esque four-legged stand is a feature we have liked on Samsung’s TVs since 2010, so we’re happy to see the trend continuing here.

At 29.7mm thick the Series 8 is a reasonably slim TV. It’s not as stunning as the Series 9 LED TV from 2010, which was thinner than a pencil, but we think the Series 8 would look great mounted against a wall with Samsung’s thin picture-frame wall mount.

The Samsung Series 8 is bundled with a novel remote control, which has a standard remote control layout on one side and a QWERTY tactile keyboard on the other. The QWERTY keyboard makes entering Web addresses or router passwords much easier than the traditional remote control keypad, and we like its inclusion even though we think it’ll get minimal day-to-day use. We did have some trouble getting used to flipping it over when a text-friendly prompt came up, and we found we had to be within a few metres of the TV to use it.

Samsung Series 8 3D LED TV: Connectivity

Just like the Series 8 plasma , the Series 8 LED has four HDMI ports, a couple of USB 2.0 connectors, Ethernet, built-in Wi-Fi, digital audio out, VGA and break-out ports for component and composite video. The TV’s active shutter 3D glasses sync up through an inbuilt infrared transmitter.

Sony KDL-65HX923(KDL65HX923)Video Review-65 Inch 3D HD LED TV ...

The Sony KDL-65HX923 flat panel has seen Sony produce a flag ship screen which introduces a whole host of new technical specifications and developments to give something very special indeed. The initial impact of the Sony KDL65HX923BU is immediate. The edge to edge glass mirror design is classy to the maximum reminding me of the old Pioneer Kuro HDTV sets.

The Sony KDL-65HX923BU TV itself is full LED Backlit. Meaning, that it situates LEDs at the back of the LCD screen to give more control over the contrast and brightness by increasing or decreasing the LED light in association with what is on screen.  This is no new idea, what refines this above and beyond the call of duty is the Intelligent Peak Technology. The idea behind this is that on complicated scenes with a mixture of very bright and very dark, the power used to light the LED which is dark is redistributed the brighter part of the image therefore intensifying the associated LED. What this does in practice is reduce dramatically the Halo effect and create a 1080p HD definition that is truly remarkable.

The Sony KDL-65HX923 also has the top of the range XR800 Motion technology built in. This utilises the initial 400Hz refresh rate by then introducing in between each frame a further black frame recreating the equivalent of over 150 frames on each individual frame. This gives the Sony KDL65HX923BU the ultimate in motion handling, ultra refined imagery and at last a picture on live events that is worthy and competes against the very best that plasma can offer.

All the above also leads up to the 3D ability on the screen. With such classy images on the Sony KDL65HX923BU in 2D the 3D response should be amazing. Hook up a Blu Ray, put on your 3D glasses and what we are see here is the image driving the TV to the maximum.  With a response rate that looks like plasma in style, mixed with the vibrancy of LCD and little to no cross talk, we are seeing the pinnacle of available LED widescreen design. This is a HDTV flagship model, so we should be seeing flagship widescreen flat panel performance – and it does this in mass.

With all the talk of HD and Blu Ray, this HDTV has not forgotten about its ability to produce on the lower resolutions, whether this be standard PAL 576i, 720p/1080i HD Freeview or compressed footage like on You Tube. With the inclusion of X-Reality Pro, the Sony KDL-65HX923 manages to eek out the upmost from sometimes pretty rubbish video footage. It is almost like a Dolby Noise Reduction System for images, taking away a lot of the picture noise and really milking it for all its worth. It gives a great performance and gives it the accolade of ultimate all rounder.
