These were some of the headlines and billboard ads following the May 21 date. In case you missed it, the world as we know it was supposed to have ended with the second coming of Christ at 6 p.m. May 21, according to radio preacher Harold Camping.
This was not his first — nor would it be his last — attempt at setting the date for Christ’s return. He said it was going to happen in 1988 and 1994, and now he predicts it will be Oct. 21 of this year. Unfortunately, he suffered a stroke in recent days, and we may not be hearing much more from him.
Jesus spoke of his second coming on a number of occasions, and within those revelations, one specific thought is included, “no one but the Father knows the date.” Not even Jesus himself, according to his own testimony.
Teachings on the second coming of Christ have been particularly cherished by the church in difficult days. Paul penned the book of I Thessalonians in part as a response to this church, which was enduring great persecution. Their question had been, “What happens to those who die before his return?” New Testament writers hoped for and believed in Christ’s eminent return.
Indeed, in the difficult days in which we live, it should not be surprising to hear those who are looking forward to Christ’s return. Christians are being persecuted in China and many Muslim lands, in particular. Many Christians in America are feeling marginalized in an increasingly secular society.
Will Christ return Oct. 21?
If I were to venture a guess, it would be no. The Bible teaches God will not share his glory with another. God does not need Harold Camping or me or you to set the date. If Camping got it right, then many would try to give him the glory instead of God getting the glory on that day.
Could Christ return Oct. 21?
Absolutely. It is God’s choice, and no one will stand in the way on the day of Christ’s return.
Then how should we live?
It has been said that Christians always should live as though he could return today. We should live with a passion to honor him. Our business between him and others should be up to date. Furthermore, we should be sharing the message of his hope, love and forgiveness available to all who choose to receive, in no small part because there will come a time when it will be too late.
We do not know when Christ will return. But it will happen and it may be soon. Live as though it may be today.

). But the main principle that he proceeds on is the oneness of Christ and His people. Our faith in Jesus unites us with Him. It also identifies us with Him. Our fellowship with Jesus would be useless and invalid, and our destruction would be imminent if He had not risen from the grave. But because He has it is our life and our glory. Because He has been raised from the dead, we too who are His at His appearing will also be resurrected. Because He lives we shall live also.

Precious Heavenly Father, let me take this opportunity to say thank You for the provision that You have made for those who have died in Christ Jesus. Thank You that we do not have to live as those who have no hope. But Lord our hope is in Christ Jesus, and His completed work on the Cross and His resurrection. Lord help us all to look eagerly forward to the day when we will be with You forever. In Jesus name I pray. Amen!
