An aquatic vision: Eureka council set to consider Halvorsen property, police ...
Brian Nunn has big plans for a swath of property near Eureka's Halvorsen Park -- plans he hopes will result in a healthier and more economically vibrant community.
The Eureka City Council will consider Tuesday whether to enter into an exclusive right to negotiate an agreement with Nunn's group, Mission Swimpossible, over its potential purchase of the city-owned property to build an aquatic wellness center. According to Nunn, the agreement would be a huge step forward for the project, which his group projects will cost about $25 million but will ultimately generate as much as $4 million in annual economic activity.
”It's a way that we can bring something here that would help the health of our community and also bring an economic impact,” Nunn said.
The vision calls for the construction of a 70,000-square-foot center with a gymnasium, a restaurant, retail space and three swimming pools, including one that would be the only indoor Olympic-size pool between San Francisco and central Oregon. In addition to offering swim classes, aquatic rehabilitation, practice space for local swim teams and aquatic recreation and exercise, the center would host events as a way to bring in revenue and be self-sustainable, Nunn said.
He estimated the new center, which would connect to the adjacent park and the city's Adorni Center, would host about eight events a year -- everything from the senior Olympics and high school swim meets to water polo matches and triathlons -- each of which would draw between 500 and 1,000 families.
With the Humboldt Convention and Visitors Bureau estimating that the average visiting family spends about $800 on a weekend trip to the county, Nunn said each event could generate as much as $800,000 in the local economy, with money spent in local stores, hotels and restaurants.
Eureka City Manager David Tyson, a former competitive swimmer himself, said, “I know these meets generate a lot of attendance by not only the swimmers but families that come along and watch them participate.”
City staff is recommending the council approve the negotiating agreement with Mission Swimpossible, but the council has another option. Travis Schneider also submitted a proposal for the site.

Pure drinking water is a fundamental part of good health. It ranks only second to oxygen as essential for life. Did you know that you can survive for thirty days without food but no more than three days without drinking water? In fact, 70% of your body is made up of water and without it you would be poisoned to death by your own waste products.
Drinking water aids digestion and absorption of food, regulates body temperature, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells and removes toxins and other wastes. The body’s water also cushions joints and protects tissues and organs including the spinal cord from shock. Conversely a lack of drinking water or dehydration can be the cause of many ailments.
