You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to give the yard and garden a personal touch, as shown by the creativity, flamboyance and outright wackiness of Madisonians in coming up with just the right décor to fit their personalities.

Don’t forget, this is Madison, a city with a governing body that voted to make the plastic pink flamingo the official city bird.

Gnomes are big here, along with the “official” flamingos, unique sculptures and bird cages, and the occasional Tonka toy dump truck hauling pansies.

Whimsy is everywhere in Madison, from State Street to the Capitol Square to the shores of our lakes, so why shouldn’t the gentle townspeople add some color and a chuckle or two into their personal domains?

With 1,000 flamingos standing in pink profusion around old Abe on Bascom Hill, and a half-submerged Lady Liberty poking out of the Lake Mendota ice as iconic symbols of Madtown mirth, we most certainly can smile at tree faces, Dutch boys and girls smooching, and old vinyl reinvented as a garden fence.

These spindly things aren’t made well. But since I only needed them as a table centerpiece, they served their purpose.

The wire legs didn’t attach securely. So my centerpiece was quite fragile. One false move and the thing would collapse.

I wasn’t pleased with the quality of the flamingo bodies. They actually looked dirty when they arrived. At first I thought perhaps they were used. (They might have been.)

Regardless, they served their purpose. They were the right size and the right shade of pink.

If you’re looking for a secure flamingo to stand for more than just a few hours, this is NOT what you’re looking for.
